The history of San Pedro de Alcantara began being written by the Marquis del Duero, who built a residential area next to the church in this municipality. It was a residential area for families. The growth of this municipality from a century ago has been a spectacular one. In the year 1945 when Pedro Becerra was the mayor of Marbella, he bought the home that Marques del Duero built, and this became part of Marbella. From then on, the short history of San Pedro de Alcantara, the history of the 20th century has all been under the history of Marbella.
In this location, Romans settled here in the first centuries of our era. There are roman hot springs in the area of the Guadalmina river. It´s most ancient monument is the Vega del Mar basilica dating back to the 4th century, or the Vigilant towers from the 16th century that are next to the beach in Guadalmina.
In the urban nucleus of San Pedro de Alcantara you´ll find the Church square built in the 9th century by the Marquis del Duero, as well as the church that gives name to the square it is built in.
In the 9th century the first census in San Pedro de Alcantara was started. In 1860 36 people lived, and a year ater this number climbed to 530. Little by little people from Istan, Marbella and Estepona started arriving in this locality. San Pedro de Alcantara had been born in the year 1861, and a few year later in 1873 the church was built by the engineer Azucarero.
In the middle of the 20th century the first people began registering their homes in this municipality.
From then on the demographic growth of homes in this area made a big jump and by the end of the 20th century the southern area began it´s construction giving the municipality the possibility to double it´s population. Today the population of San Pedro de Alcantara is over 24,000 inhabitants. |
